    Dummy load fluid

I've always gone to my local electrical utility repair shop, and they've always had a gallon or two of transformer oil left over from jobs. A dozen donuts generally gets me more than I need.

    YAESU FL-2100B resistor question

Generally it's good practice to use what the builder specifies. For RF equipment, the big problem is with wirewound resistors which can add a lot of inductive reactance where it's not needed nor wanted. For low-power resistors (half-watt or so) it's probably okay to substitute metal oxide for...

    Best FCC CB Radio?

He wants a six-digit frequency indicator AND, apparently, FCC certification. For the certification, transmit frequency control is channelized...no VFO on the transmit side. If the channel selector indicates "CH20", you're on channel twenty. No need to worry about six digits of resolution.

"Venom", eh? The cobra fills its mouth with venom And crawls upon its duodenum. And he who dares to tease the cobra Is soon a sadder man, and sobra. Thank you, Ogden Nash! (pronounce it VEE-num).

This is how I learned it. The resistance doesn't matter; resonance is determined by the value of inductive reactance coupled with an equal (but with the opposite sign) value of capacitive reactance.

    TV ANTENNA ROTATOR WTB

Back when I was a Novice, there was a guy two grades ahead of me at Las Vegas High who used a quad antenna up about 40 feet. The tower was right outside his bedroom window, reachable by opening the window. The antenna mast ran all the way to the ground. He used a large wrench on the mast and...

    TV ANTENNA ROTATOR WTB

If the rotator can handle the weight of the antenna and stand up to the wind load, I'd probably go for it. And BTW: my arms are 75 YO!

    TV ANTENNA ROTATOR WTB

If you just need to see how well it works I'd recommend the Armstrong rotator. If you have an ARM that's Strong (and a long piece of rope to hold it in position), it would be cheaper than even a cheap TV rotator. If testing shows enough difference (and it should), THEN spring for the electric...

    Dx 100

I had the Heath DX-100B, which was every bit as bulky but was upgraded a bit to be more stable and had a slightly heavier power supply IIRC. I didn't build it though. Bought it from my High School electronics teacher. If HE built it, it was built to his standrds. It worked perfectly; both as a...

Passed 20wpm code test on a straight key in Portland OR in 1976, officially, and passed the written test easily without worry. And this was well before the internet tests online. I'd been licensed since 1959, though, and had only operated cw most of that time. Learning by doing is the way to...

    Anyone help with bleeding

A lot depends on what kind of coax you're using. If it's the 1/4" stuff, like RG-58 or RG-8X, a 5" diameter coil wouldn't hurt up to a few hundred watts. Beyond that, there's RG-213 and similar 0.405" diameter cable, which has a bend RADIUS of about 5 inches (meaning a coil diameter not less...

Coax length on mag mount question

What kind of amplifier are you using? Is it installed correctly? Obviously, the amplifier doesn't see a load that it likes and that it can work with. How does the radio by itself work? I'd put in a new run of good coax and tuck the extra away, not coiled up and/or kinked, where it won't trip...
