1/2 wave Vs 5/8 wave vertical for DX?

No guarantees; build it and test it. Keep records of changes you make and how the performance is changed. If Marconi had built his transmitter and was looking for this thread on the Internet so he could build the best antenna somewhere around150 years ago he'd probably still be looking...

Rare meteor storm possible over Memorial Day weekend

I'd like to see a good shower; a storm would be nice. Not the kinds of storm we've had all day here in the central Kitsap county of WA state. Many years ago I built a 12-inch mirror, trying my best to get a close-to-perfect curve. When I was done I packed it securely and sent it from Las...

    Battery Tester

You most likely don't need a digital battery test station; an analog meter can be just as accurate or even accurater (new word). An analog meter with a good pivot and jewel movement should be rugged enough for most information you'd need.

    Diawa CN-101L Calibration?

If the dummy load resistors are not actually 25 ohms and 100 ohms (and maybe one for 50 ohms), your "calibration" will be off by the difference between "should be" and "actually is". A $10 Harbor Freight multimeter isn't much good in this application.

    New Ham (KN6TUX)

I never worked a KN6 as a novice; FCC began issuing WV6 prefixes for new California novices, upgrading them to WA6 prefixes when the licensee upgraded, this was back in the early 1960s. I had to look at the KN6TUX long and hard before it sank in. Congratulations on the new call -- makes you...

    Homebrew Co-phased Ground Plane Antennas

When I was in high school, the idea of a "Beer Can Vertical" came up. The school's Ham Radio Club gathered enough such containers with the aid of our parents and from the club's Advisers, who advised us not to help with the gathering of parts. Of course, back in the early 1960s, the cans were...

    Test meter suggestions?

That wouldn't constitute a legitimate "calibration", IMO. The Bird 43 is not a Lab Standard, it requires periodic calibration itself. Read a bit about the calibration process; it's a science unto itself. Say you have "X" meter, which doesn't seem to be working properly. So you compare...

    FCC CB license

In 1960, when I was attending Las Vegas High School (go Wildcats!) we had an electronics class split among LVHS, Rancho High and Western High. The teachers used CB to coordinate classes and class time. Vegas High was "net control", and the call sign, FCC-issued and all, was 11QØØ82 -- "Eleven...

Help a Newb Pick a SW Base Station Radio Antenna

Receiving antennas are easy: A piece of wire as long as you can afford, up as high as you can get it. Back in the early 1960s I bought a secondhand Hallicrafters SX-99. All I used for listening was a piece of wire running diagonally across the ceiling of my bedroom/shack. This was back when...

Having some SWR trouble with the MFJ 1890 10 meter moxon

Periodic calibration of test equipment is absolutely necessary, and that doesn't mean "checked against another meter" unless the "other meter" has a current calibration date.

Dipole in the attic...does your attic have metallic ventilation ducts, maybe a bit of extra electrical wiring or foil faced insulation batts? Those can be showstoppers.

Yeah, my picture always used to come in sharp and clear. Now every channel is snowy. Have to check the antenna and twin lead.
