    Yaesu VX-8GR Announced

Well I don't feel like such a sucker now. I bought my VX-8R because I wanted all of the features of the VX7R but Radio city had a special on VX-8R factory refurbs for $20 less than a new VX-7. The APRS junk was a cool bonus.

That USMC handbook is really a great, easy to understand publication. Looks good for newbies and veterans alike.

    ICOM IC-7000 REVIEW

Well I broke down and ordered one yesterday. I got a supper deal on a used one for $800, with 7 months of warranty left. I can't wait for the UPS man to bring my candy. I was going to get an 857D but the Icom just has too many features which I will use, and I would be kicking myself in the rear...

    First mobile unit recommendations...

I've recently graduated from the VX8R to the FT8900. I like it a lot, although 10 and six meters haven't been very active. I can't wait for warmer weather when the bands open up for some real long distance stuff. I have the diamond CR-8900 on a four magnet mount up on the roof of my truck. I get...

    10 Meter Noise

Yes indeed. 97 Dodge Ram, the last year of the all mechanical diesels. 12 valve Cummins with a P7100 bullet proof IP. No electrical noise here.

    VX8R Volume Problem

Thanks for the response Mole. I am already familiar with that menu setting from reading the manual. ke7vvt: my problem was due to what you mentioned in the thread which Mole linked to. I have been hitting both VOL and FW at the same time. I wish that that little tidbit had been listed in the...

    10 Meter Noise

Thanks for the replies. I don't believe in spark plugs, I don't have an electric fuel pump, and it has the static whether the engine is on or off. This evening The interference is gone. Go figure. I was kind of thinking myself that maybe there could be some sort of interference from radar. The...

    VX8R Volume Problem

I'm sure that I'm just missing something in the menu settings, but sometimes my VX8R will change volume settings apparently by itself between one day and the next. I use it at work to scan local EMS and Law Enforcment channels. While scanning the various banks which I have set up, it sometimes...

    10 Meter Noise

For the past week or so, I have suddenly started getting some crazy loud static on 29.600MHZ, which is the 10meter FM calling frequency. It is so loud that I can't squelch it even with the knob turned all the way up. If I tune 5Kc to either side, I get an easily squelchable noise floor. The...

Talked to WalMart Today on a HT?

I checked the Murs frequencies last week after reading this thread and sure enough, they are on channel 3 here in Rice Lake WI. The Menards just down the road uses channel 5. I still haven't figured out the details on how to get half off on a big screen tv, by using a radio. :D

    NVIS, Near Vertical Incidence Skywave

Thanks Mole. I read that article a while back but it doesn't have much info on mobile operation.

    NVIS, Near Vertical Incidence Skywave

Thanked Hooked. That is a pretty cool antenna. I wonder where I can find plans for a home brew. SMC doesn't even list the price which is a good indication that I wouldn't be able to afford it.

    NVIS, Near Vertical Incidence Skywave

Positive reliability is what we are after. If it were as easy to make contact between 50Km and 300Km as you claim, simply by using the appropriate frequency, the military would not have to use NVIS for Battle field over-the-horizon communication. Remember that, that mobile rig only has a 3 meter...

    NVIS, Near Vertical Incidence Skywave

As part of an emergency com group, we use VHF for A and B entry teams into disaster zones. The B teams are used as VHF simplex or mobile repeater relays back to the "C" HQ location. VHF is used for the entry teams because vertical HF antennas often have a pretty extensive skip zone. Skip zone -...

    NVIS, Near Vertical Incidence Skywave

I've looked everywhere but can't find a design for a practical mobile antenna for NVIS. The military style of tied down whip might work but there must be a better design.

CB Radio - Antenna Basics: Part 1

Radials shouldn't affect the circular pattern much, but they definitely change the take off angles of the pattern and can dramatically change the shape of the radiation pattern by either flattening it out (lowering the radial angles) or rounding it out (radials at strait angles or lowered two...

    Yaesu FT-8900R.....

I just bought a new-to-me unit. I installed it yesterday, but have not yet programed it. From the little bit of playing with it which I have done this morning, I love it. The audio is very clear, and the reports from the two contacts which I made this morning were very good except for the tone...
