Galaxy Saturn (EPT360014B) freq counter issue...

Final results: Receive is great in all modes. All functions work properly with no scratchiness. Transmit is great in all modes. Output before: RF power all the way down - 3w carrier RF power all the way up - 5w carrier RF power either way - 43w PEP swing, 18w average. SSB - 43w swing Note...

Galaxy Saturn (EPT360014B) freq counter issue...

This one has the frequency counter module mounted vertically behind the display. I do have a Saturn that has the type you mentioned though. Turned out the 7805 regulator on the frequency counter module was shot, possibly due to these old caps. Instead of fixing that one at the moment I decided...

Galaxy Saturn (EPT360014B) freq counter issue...

Got another Saturn on the desk for just an evaluation, recap and alignment. Radio works great other than receive a little low on all modes but I already know where that problem is located at. The other issue is the frequency counter doesn't display at all when powering the radio on. When I flip...

    Excalibur SSB (EPT 10A board)...

Only resources I have are a few Sam's photo facts of oddball radios (not very useful for most of the radios I work on), my old school ways, online sources and you guys/gals. I do have the PLL data book and the EEPROM data book. Plus I have the secret CB books and tune up master editions (which...

    Excalibur SSB (EPT 10A board)...

Hahaha, napalm would prolly do a better job at it than soap and water, lol...

LSB tone vs USB tone question...

Got a question for the pros that I hope doesn't sound like a stupid question: Why do some radios with USB/LSB have big changes in the tone of receive from USB to LSB? What would cause LSB receive and transmit tone to sound nasally (tinny) sounding, although on frequency but USB receive and...

    Excalibur SSB (EPT 10A board)...

Got an old classic on the desk again. This time we have a 40+ year old Excalibur SSB (US version, EPT 10A board) in for checkup and recap. Upon evaluation: 1. TR32 removed 2. R249 removed 3. TR53 removed 4. Regulator swing mod 5. Swing mod in empty spot beside modulation transistor in...

Galaxy DX-55V stuck in transmit mode...

Now on to two old classics... Excalibur SSB (US version, EPT 10A board) and another Galaxy SSB Echo (also the EPT 10A board). I'll make separate threads on those though. Thank you again to all that jumped in with advice and detailed info. You're very much appreciated on my end.

Galaxy DX-55V stuck in transmit mode...

Good grief, hahaha, all this hassle over my overlooking things, lol... Turns out it was R169 not being soldered in good. One of its leads is so close to one of the R187 leads I removed that the heat from my desoldering gun must have weakened that R169 leads connection. Anyway, I resoldered...

Galaxy DX-55V stuck in transmit mode...

Noticed R169 is not soldered firmly, feels loose but joints look fine, have to dig with probe at the bottom of it to get a reading, but it does read good. Could R169 not getting soldered down firmly cause this?

Galaxy DX-55V stuck in transmit mode...

These voltages are taken from the component side, not trace side of the board. This is immediately after turning the radio on and it immediately goes in to transmit mode. Only components I haven't re-installed yet is TR33 (Roger beep oscillator), C128 and TR32. These components are left out...

Galaxy DX-55V stuck in transmit mode...

Haven't rechecked voltages on the 4558 again yet, but will in the morning. As for D77, it's the original KB diode.

Galaxy DX-55V stuck in transmit mode...

Kinda confusing on checking for voltages in the xmit/rcvr circuit since it's stuck in transmit all the time, lol...

Galaxy DX-55V stuck in transmit mode...

Sorry Cable, was typing as you sent your messages. I'll check those, I was looking over the schematic and block diagram (99v) and noticed D81 and D82 could possibly be an issue since they're in the transmit line. Thank you Cable.

Galaxy DX-55V stuck in transmit mode...

By the way, I did check the radio each time I put those parts back in one by one. I replaced the Mic OP amp after I realized it was stuck in transmit after realizing I made some boo boo's and the mic amp was showing odd numbers. Even with a brand new one, it still shows the odd numbers, so it...

Galaxy DX-55V stuck in transmit mode...

Here is a pic from of where the shorts were after I replaced those two resistors. Shorted R174 in circled area. Shorted R187 in circled area. Solder ball between positive and negative of C194. Something from above caused the radio to be stuck in transmit mode at all times now. This issue was...

Galaxy DX-55V stuck in transmit mode...

Got this Galaxy DX-55V on the desk. This is one of two 55v's I been working on lately. The other had no driver bias, thanks to another user (Cable Guy I think) it's back to working. However, this other one is a boo boo on my part. As usual, I yanked out the junk regulator swing mod, replaced...

Awesome, I'll try that out. Thank you Cable Guy.
