Most HF radios were designed to be SSB rigs, AM is not one of their strong suits. I don't know what you expect out of an AM rig. Your friends Kenwood would do much better if the AM filter was installed, that would help a whole bunch. How to help a FT 1000 I am not sure.You can experiment with...

Installing a VFO will not give you variable power. It will give you frequecy sliding capabilities though. fasteddy </p>
