I have the bf-f8hp with a Nagoya NA-771. I did find out that I can reach the repeater. Since I am new to ham, this is my first radio. Of course I am going for general and more radios soon. But I will still build and tinker around with antennas. Always been an interest of mine.
I have an HT radio and all the local repeaters are 16+ miles away. I am looking into making a 2 meter beam. I have an old M400 starduster antenna that I could use. Would this antenna be sufficient to use to make an beam? And, could anyone give me suggestions on proper matching system for the...
Thanks for all of the replies. I am official now. My call sign is KN4JQP (I updated my profile). I also programmed my radio with repeater frequencies I my local area. None if the repeaters close enough to make a contact. I am now looming into making a 2 meter beam.
I've been having trouble getting on the site here.
On the 12th, I passed my test for tech. I ordered a HT as a beginner radio. It will be here Friday. As I wait for my call sign, I will be researching and learning how to program my radio.
Once again, thanks for the suggestions on where and how...
Thanks for the replies. I have started reading the flash cards on Hamstudy.org. I have trouble with the abbreviations in the questions. I believe I still need a manual, to help me understand more about the operations and features that are mentioned in the questions.
Hey guys,
I grew up talking on CB radios. I still have a mobile that I talk on from time to time. I have been researching (online) for info to getting my licence. I know I need to get a study manual for my tech licence. I have found a few different manuals online. Which one is a good manual...
Homer, great info on the build. I am getting up materials to build a 11 meter moxon. I will be constructing a solid square with a boom out of pvc. I'm not sure the wire lengths I have is correct. I have used two online calculators that have given me different lenghts. Would you mind calculating...
I will actually be building a moxon beam. Once I test it on the air, I will probably modify it to be a dual polarity antenna. Basically two beams on one boom. I posted earlier that I was using a balun at the feed point. I'm curious if a direct feed would be a better way to go. Any suggestions?
I have a few questions for a project antenna build. First, I'm going to build a two element beam using 13 ga. wire on a pvc frame. When using wire, is it necessary to remove the shielding from the whole wire? If so, would a clear enamel be a good choice to coat the wire for protection? I will...
I understand the difference between horizontal and vertical windloads. I'm looking at the Maco Comet. The pdf file I dowloaded says the comet has a 4 sq. ft. windload. The Maco website spec sheet says it has a 5.26 sq. ft. windload. Not much of a difference but just curious as to which spec I...
I looked on Maco's website today for some info on their beams and found a pdf file called their " flyer". I dowloaded it to have for later reference. The flyer windload specs are the same as other Maco distributors. I did find another antenna spec sheet on Maco's website. This spec sheet has...
Thanks guys. Room for a beam is no issue but wind gusts are. I do want a dual polarity antenna. I believe I will go with a Maco comet or shooting star. The comparison between Macos and Gizmos boom lenghts confused me a little. Thanks again. 73s
Hi everyone. I'm still looking for a beam. My question is about boom length. I compared a Maco 3 element to a Gizmo 3 element and noticed this... Maco boom length is 11.5 ft with 11db gain... Gizmo boom length ia 9 ft with 12 db gain. Both beams have a 25db front to back. Question is, longer...
Thanks for the replies. Marconi, lightning antennas is the website I was referring to. I've tried to find and download their pdf on their quads. Not much luck or not enough time to spend looking for it...lol. I have SE's website bookmarked. I referr to it all the time. Thanks for the links. I...
Homer, what would the spacing be between the 2 driven elements and would this construction narrow the bandwidth? Is there a website that might show the proper way to construct the driven elements? Aren't the old Avanti pdl-2 quads dual polarity with a single element? I've seen a website that has...
