    Why so few manpackable options?

I guess what really got me into HAM was the proficiency at RF theory and operating radios and utilizing appropriate signal sets for optimal communications without blasting 100000watts. I really don't have a huge interest in having competition rigs or making world wide contacts, I just wanted to...

    Grounding and Homemade antenna's.

Okay so I apologize first off if this question has been answered already but I did search the forum and google first. So I read on another site (eham) that the braid of coax can be used to ground an antenna (electrical ground) via grounding rod. Which confuses me a bit because in the case of...

    Replacement Batteries

Okay so I recently bought a Icom IC-T81A and a Kenwood TH-F6A and obviously I want to get new batteries, I have found a couple companies (batteriesamerica.com) that offer decent looking replacements as well as drop-in cradle chargers. I was wondering if anyone has experience with these...

    2/70 Mobile/Base Station Rig.

Hey I am looking to get a nice mobile rig that has the option to be powered by an AC adapter, should I just pick on I like (Yaseu 8800) and get a AC-DC house power inverter? Or am I better off finding a mobile rig that has a manufacturer supported AC power option?

    Mobile/Portable HF Unit? FT-897D

Okay so first off I know I have been posting a lot lately and I want to say I have been searching the forums and google/universal-radio/hamcity/etc before posting. I was browsing universal-radio and noticed that the FT-897D was a mobile/base HF/6m/2m/70cm rig that also had the ability to be...

    350MHz, 500,600,700,800Mhz?

I have only seen business band/public safety radios configured for these frequencies. Is there anyway, short of buying a public safety radio, modify an existing transciever to tx these freqs? Some background on why, I am an Paramedic and if I want to use my HAM rig to tx on my work freqs.

    Earth Moon Earth Comms

Okay I have seen some chatter about this but can't seem to find out what radios are capable of this and how you do it. I was hoping someone here could enlighten me.

    Getting started...scanners or not?

Alright so I am brand new to HAM and started wondering if anyone out there uses multiple scanners/wide band recievers in their shack to monitor emergency services, business band, military, air comms, etc, how many scanners do you have? How do you have them setup? Do just have them in your shack...

    Good all purpose HT?

I'm looking to get a good quality HT with a wideband reciever, high power output(relative for an HT), and expanded/expandable TX range. I have experience with the Yaesu VX7R and VX8R/DR's and was wondering how those and the rest of the VX family (VX5R, VX6R) stacked up against competitors such...

Hey I am brand new to the world of HAM but I have a pretty decent RF theory background, I have seen some HF/6m/2m/70cm capable transcievers, I am looking to get into HAM and I want to have a mobile unit for my car that can tx/rx on in all three ranges. Am I better off going with three seperate...
