Since i have had this radio for a couple weeks now, i have to say that the Icom ID-31A is an awesome radio. easy to use and dstar is totally awesome. very happy I purchased this radio and am really enjoying it totally.
actually i think waterproof is a good thing especially with the weather we have been having lately. pretty much think that my main usage is going to be in the digital mode, getting spoiled already from not listening to bacon frying and picket fencing anymore. I may use analog at times but...
i should have bought a few things for it but didnt think about them until i was home, should have bought a carrying case, speaker mike and a car cord and maybe a decent mag mount antenna for my van. always can order them online or there is always time to get them later. this radio is awesome
I am also finding out that digital seems to have more range to it as well, i was able to talk on a dstar repeater 25 miles away on the id-31a today, i have changed the stock antenna to a comet sma24 but highly doubt that that would ever be possible with a non digital radio. also digital signal...
I went to superfest at AES in Milwaukee Wi yesterday, bought a Icom ID-31A ht. so far I really enjoy d-star, it will be a little bit of a learning curve but the id-31a has most of the dstar repeaters pre programmed and uses its built in gps to locate the nearest repeaters. figured out how to...
as i have had my Baofeng uv5-ra for almost a month now and use it every day thought i would update my thoughts on it. When i first ordered it i was quite leary of it since it was not a brand i ever heard of and well it is made in china, we all remember the chinese dog food issues. when it...
really wish i could find a chinese radio that is d-star compatible, then the price would be about a third of what the icom 92ad sells for, kinda like the baofeng is about a third of the price of a yaesu or kenwood ht.
here we go again today in the chicago area, supposed to start by late morning in chicago and continue thru the night, expected to start as freezing rain then change to all snow then possibly end as freezing rain.... my rear wheel drive chevy astro should be quite fun later today...
they have a few digital radios:
icom 92ad, icom ic-51a, icom ic-31a for d-star
hytera among others for mototrbo as well as motorola.
there may be more that i am not aware of yet.
I just bought a Baofeng uv-5ra talkie. it is dual band 2 meter 440. so far it works awesome, and awesome battery life. I can even use it on my local radio club's 440 repeater from my basement which i could never do with the icom i had. looking into digital mode too and interested in getting...
woke up to my van being 3 inches taller, if it wasnt for the radio antenna on it i may not have seen my van since it is white as the snow
still snowing in chicago
I am planning on going, hopefully i remember the camera. thinking about checking out a d-star radio either a icon 92ad, ic-51a or ic-31a. not sure which one yet.
google is quite helpful on some things but you have to wade thru hours of crap usually to find what you are looking for. i prefer to ask people their opinion on equipment usually
I have had my uv-5ra for a few weeks now, so far I am very impressed with it. I have had radios from the "big 3" and this is the first talkie that I can use my local radio club's 440 machine from my basement with the stock antenna, havent been able to try it on 2 meters yet since the club's 2...
I've had my uv-5ra for about a week now, so far i really like the little radio. I programmed it from the keypad, however that was a bit of a bear until I figured it out. the paper manual is worthless but searching the web for programming instructions made it fairly easy. I may get an aftermarket...
