I was thinking if the amplifier keyed, it might go into oscillations. So the keying relay would trigger, but as soon as it did, the RF would be gone so it would unkey. Maybe the relay would chatter?
If he had it backwards, it might have damaged the final in his radio. Might not have hurt the amp. Pop the cover and see if anything looks burnt. Maybe hook it up and see what it does?
My best sounding SSB rig is a President Madison with DX 500v and D104 with aftermarket mic amp. Beats out the Icom 718 with rack gear, Stryker 955 or anything else I have been able to set on the desk.

Those radios are pretty good out of the box. And there are adjustments in the service menu to put it on frequency and adjust the modulation among other things. But if it works, I would run it and see what it does.
