Another unannounced one from ranger

Defects I have found so far:
- Stock SRA-198 microphone attenuates modulation significantly
- out-of-the-box SSB power far below 12w
- 3mm external speaker connector does not return to open after 3mm speaker connection is removed. No audio until connector is then re-inserted part way, then removed.
I've had a couple ranger made radios with the speaker jack issue you describe. You can clean those contacts and find flux being the issue. The sra-198 is known for that, you have to almost eat the mic when talking into it. For that reason I prefer either the 636L or Telex rk56 over the 198. I think you'll find the bad factory tune to be another commonality among the rangers.
A little work and they're great talkers in my own opinion, have used many ranger made radios for years. Unfortunately that's just what we get anymore.
Yeah same thing I've experienced with the SRA-198 they kill noise but kill your audio pretty strongly as well. I prefer the Road Devil if I need a noise cancelling mike as it's a power mike.

I have the wire in the RB holes but those knobs... they look tough to remove to get to the ch19 switch...any pointers? these are NOT galaxy knobs, they're RCI.

weight reduction and attempt at de-muffling the element. No joy in modulation yet...element probably needs an appendectomy.

Years back I'd use a flat thin blade screwdriver covered with a couple wraps of tape and worked ok and without scratching the faceplate. My wife has a thin rubber mat that's for gripping jar lids and works great, and it's great for gripping knobs to pull them right off too. I used hers a few times she eventually just bought me my own.figured out the knob removal

not exactly. I had to remove the side screws from the face plate first to allow the face plate to swivel up and then down when prying outward on the knobs, otherwise there was no clearance like there is on the galaxy radios to get a purchase on them.
the rubber jar opener is a great idea too. I used something like that technique after I had a put a knob back and forgot the nylon washer.

Got mine today, checking it out now. 4w dead key swings over 20w peak. Modulation around 90%, I might tweak it a little. SSB power around 8 to 10w, might tweak it too.
Mine showed up today but this is what they left... wife sent me the picture. Unbelievable how things get handled by the carriers. Hopefully the contents are ok, we'll find out tonight.
