Murray KY.
Was lurking in my closet, and forgotten for many years. Other than a frozen S meter, which I replaced, it works great.

And when the 46 year-old electrolytic capacitors begin to 'remember' how old they are, Klondike Mike can fix you up with a full kit of 3 dozen caps (or so) at a decent price.

If it works, this is clearly a low-mileage radio. But like a 46 year-old radiator hose, you'll experience a breakdown after putting some miles on it. Just no telling how many miles.

Full disclosure, Mike is a member here.

I don't see a kit for the version 1 858 Grant. Only the Uniden 196A and 999. I'm thinking this will work https://klondikemikescapkits.com/products/president-washington-electrolytic-capacitor-kit-v1

If I remember right, I bought this on clearance in 1980, and hardly used since. Never been traumatized with a golden screwdriver, it's a stock radio.

This may be what you are looking for. You need to confirm the main board number to ensure compatibility.

Been using it for almost a week now. Killer audio, and the receive is phenomenal for an old CB radio. But the 858 has always been known for those attributes. An eventual recap is in the works, but I'm leaving it completely stock. Why mess with a good thing?

It's not just the years, but the miles, too. A low-mileage radio will take longer to 'remember' how old it is. Might as well get your money's worth from the 46 year-old caps.

Just one suggestion: Pluck out C179. It's rated at 25 Volts, and any increase in AM modulation past 100 percent will exceed that cap's voltage rating. It routinely then fails as a short circuit. Not healthy for the uobtanium relay and other parts. A cap rated at 35 Volts or more will do just fine. Doesn't have to be a tantalum. I'm told that an aluminum electrolytic works just fine. And other folks will tell you not to bother to replace it, just remove it.

But they all agree, remove it no matter what you do next.

Well, since the radio has never been modified, I don't think it's an issue, but still a good idea, nonetheless.
Thanks for the heads up.

I actually have another UPD 858 Grant in the woodwork somewhere...
If memory serves me correct, I had it recapped and aligned in 2019, just before moving from the deep freeze of northwest WI to the TN valley. Still going through boxes to find it, but there aren't a whole lot more to go through. But so far, this one performs flawlessly.
