Galaxy DX-2517........where to begin???

Fair enough, but don't complain when the radios available for 11 meters are crap or the band is dead. Anyway, it's all that you want to do. 73
I like 11 meter radios, and the band is far from dead for the next couple years. The 2517 is a great 11 meter radio that can be improved uppon with simple mods like locking the tx/rx frequency together with the clarifier mod.
I enjoy helping the licsensed hams that come in to the cb shop that have had their ticket for a couple years but have never talked dx. All it takes is a stryker 955, lincoln 2 or rcix9 and an active 11 meter freqency and they start making contacts. I will always remember the way one Gentlman who had just recently gotten his technicians license face lit up after I made a contact on .915 with his new 955. He said "You just picked up the mic and started talking" with a smile.

Was an old DX-er back in the 80's. Full circle and want to get back into the game. Have an untouched DX-2517 and would like to know simple and good mods for this. Going with a 4-6 beam antenna and 1000-ish liner.

So with that in mind what should be done to the base if anything? "Worldwide" isn't my goal but I'd like to get out a little and sound clear!!!! Thanks.............
With a beam and 1000 watts or so your just going to punish your neighbors and piss off the locals if you do any hack mods. Put your Galaxy on a qualified tech bench have aligned in the band you're most likely to talk on the most and with a scope set the modulation to no more than 100 percent. Any more and it will bleed everything over behind that thousand watts.

Learned a while back you can bleed more neighbors with overmodulation than with wattage alone. Had cable TV at our shop back in the day. I kept a TV on in the work room as a canary in the coal mine when talking on 11 meters. If it got silly, I assumed the neighbors' TVs were also at risk of interference. And if my TV was clean, I could key the mike and show any neighbor that my TV didn't care about the CB. Had a Galaxy Turbo as our bench radio, and a modified MLA 2500 linear we used to calibrate wattmeters. It had been upgraded to two 3CX800 tubes and would hold a 1000-Watt carrier as long as I needed. On the beam it could do 2500 Watt peaks. The Turbo had been modded to put the AMC and ALC adjustments on the front panel on a dual pot where the echo controls had been. I would set the AM modulation limiter where the TV was clean while transmitting. Checking this on the 'scope revealed around 90 percent modulation more or less. Found that with the MLA in line it would show no more than about 1400 Watt peaks this way. But the TV was clean.

With 1400 Watt peaks.

I would hear the locals arguing after I bid them 10-7. If asked was I running power I had a stock answer: "Who are you kidding?". Not really an answer, but they would shrug and change the subject. One guy said "He must be barefoot. I went up and down one channel and he didin't scratch me one bit." Another one said there was something funny because I covered up a guy three blocks from him.

Yes, wattage can bleed the neighbors' home entertainment toys, but distortion does it better.
