If these things worked, every manufacturer would add one small RF transistor to the front end of their receivers. They don't because it ruins both the signal to noise ratio and the selectivity of the receiver. The result is more inside noise generated by the pre-amp and more bleedover. Once the receiver has enough gain to generate a noise level in the absence of a signal, no further increase in gain will help copy a weaker signal. If a pre-amp makes a big improvement on your receiver, this a strong indication that something is wrong with that receiver.

Hey Shockwave...

Good point, because each and every radio out there has a particular "trademark" of circuit used for the RF amp.

So it also means that they have a response curve to weak signal versus strong signal ratios - adds to the complexity and the circuitry involved. The more that gets added, the more the S to N ratio becomes important.

White noise can put people to sleep - but do they need to buy a Radio for that feature?

Hello gentlemen and Ladies. I have the dreaded RCI-2990 receive issue where my radio gets distorted when people get close to my location. I found the C90 Capacitor, but I can not for the life of me find the C89 capacitor. Can or does anyone have a picture of the exact location of C89 ? Thank you in advance, Wes

Wes, it's better if you start a thread on the main forum, more people are going to see your question.
