PEAKED ON AM=PEAKED ON SSB?

When someone internaly peaks a radio on am does that automaticly raise your ssb wattage? I'm assuming the output on a cb is the same wheather on am or ssb. I know the output on am is lower than of ssb but if a radio puts out 3 watts on am and swings from zero to 10 on ssb when modulation is applied, will peaking that radio to 5 watts on am show a higher output on ssb? Are there separate output adjustments for am and ssb, or will peaking it on am automaticly bring up the ssb signal? Just curious. I still haven't bought my ssb radio yet but have a lead and I'm currently working on it.

Its the other way round; radios are peaked in SSB mode..
If you don't have the proper tools, know-how, and experience; then better to let a shop do it right.

Best to let a tech tune and align on the radio as posted by Robb. It's worth it in the long run as there are certain procedures that need to be taken to properly tune the radio and align it properly as well.

Most radios today have separate level adjustments for AM and SSB. Years ago you just cranked up the big ceramic form wire wound pot mounted on the chassis and let her rip on AM and SSB. Anybody remember those? I knoe the Midlands and some others had them. They adjusted the voltage to the finals.

TEC YES, ME NO.

I definitely have a Tec do all work needed. Therradio I'm inquiring about will be an older radio. The reason for my question was purely driven by curiousity. It seems like most all the ssb base radios I'm Concidering have been peaked. Peaked meaning someone had a screwdriver in there trying to squeeze every drop out of there radios. The amp I'm using works great with 2 1/2 watts into it. The ssb radio I finally purchase will no doubt have to be brought down from whatever its at. 2 1/2 to 3 watts is what I'm comfortable pushing through this amp. I was lucky enough to track down the guy who restored a few cb's and transmitters for me adout 26 years ago.he's still going strong.

If you are concerned about putting too much power into the amp, I can fully understand that and completely agree. But un-peaking the TX coils is not the way to reach that goal. Best to peak the coils and then turn down the SSB/ALC and then the dead key to 2w for AM. That should do the trick. Any decent shop can do all of that, so long as you let them know that is what you need.

I have quite a collection of radio alignment tools and I can assure you they are FAR more expensive than one might think! That is, if you are considering going that route. But if you are a tinkerer; then you will go that way just the same. . .

NOT WILLING TO SETTLE

I'm really looking forward to purchaseing my first ssb radio. It's gonna be a base. I'm trying my bes to find a virgin. Being I have my heart set on the President Madison, it's become obvious that very few escaped the screwdriver. I found an unmolested sbe V. That actually was my first choice. I had to stay fast on my high number. It's to bad for me, I may have lost this radio because I wasn't willing to get into a biding war. I've learned very quickly not to fall into that macho biding scene. When that happens you may win what your biding on but when looking back only to realize you paid $100 or more than you wanted too and $200 more than it's worth in the first place. So I patiently wait. I'm positive my patients will pay off and I will get exactly what I'm looking for, a very nice looking unmolested unmodified ssb base radio thats gonna give me many good years on ssb. Once again I thank all the members of WWDX. That answered my and many other posts with patients and knowledge. I have this feeling we may be the last generation of cb'ers and hams. With all the advancments in personal comunicton devices available to the young, who knows. I imagine, it's 2065, two 90 something year olds, the air waves are completely silent except for these two people. After a long qsl, Thay say 73's. In the morning one takes the long sleep. That day his friend keys up at there usual Time but there's no answer. Only silence. Silence, silence, silence. That's it its all over. One old man sitting in his shack with no one else to qsl with. The last cb/ham operator, past up by youth and advanced personal comunicton devices. Oh well.

Finding any of those radios (Uniden/President Madison, 148GTL, Cobra 200GTL, etc...once again, the very same radio in a different pkg) from that era that hasn't been modded is nearly an impossibility. I also wouldn't believe but few that said it hadn't been modded. This what I have seen. In fact having said that, have restored many of these radios back to stock using only accepted mods done by the book. Afraid that is the best one can hope for. Hope for the best . . .
