Educate me on what is taking place here:

The higher rated amp will "tote the load" so to speak. The owner has been enlightened and offered thanks for someone pointing this out to him in a kind way as he did not realize that.
He has since removed the 5 amp supply.

yes, 2 power supplies with the SAME output would give you those results.

ok then what will two power supplies with different rated output give you?

How many amps will the setup in the picture produce?

A better question would be, how long would that set up furnish any power at all?

Exactly - the higher amperage supply will try to handle the entire load. When it does it will dump high current into the smaller supply - and *POOF*. Even two supplies of the same output need to be modified so they will share the load equally. The exception would be supplies designed to be ran in parallel.
