I'm somewhat shopping for a transceiver and some of them have this

Just wondered what it is  :D

Thanks in advance I'm gonna take my test 27 June and looking for something decent that might partially function and I can work on.
At first I kinda ruled out any tubes but now I see that maybe some tubes are more available than output transistors.
So I'm lost but it's all good I don't really want to talk just listen that would be cool.

I'm still overwhelmed I really need a heads-up on what type of radio would be the easiest to find people talking about anything honestly I don't care if it's somebody reading a phone book.
Unfortunately I still want a boat anchor I can play with.

Thanks in advance this place ROCKS you guys THE BEST (y):coffee:

maybe to mute a separate receiver, activate an external VFO or anything the manufacturer designs into the radio.
I remember Johnson made some early CB radios that used this for a selective call feature.
It was a plug in accessory that muted the rx until it heard the correct tone to open the receiver.
I think Lafayette had something like that as well.

Called an (x) pin octal plug. Common on some older rigs for accessory connections and also for power cords from an external power supply to the transceiver. You see them on a lot of older tube rigs. The old Yaesu rigs seem to have used them a lot. The Tempo One used them for connecting the external power supply to the transceiver.

It's a socket for a power cord... I've recapped so many tube radios that I know this to be a fact...

I know for a fact that Lafayette did make a selective call feature. It was called Priva-Com 3C. Pictured below...

What's it on the back of? Connections to and from will vary with manufacturer. Yaesu carried screen and driver voltages, ran the Tube Heater circuit in and out and had a set of relay contacts (N/C and N/O) accessible via the plug.

Heathkit HW/SB-104 used it for Ext VFO power and T/R relay access. Earlier SB series connected the HP-23(A) power supply this way, as did the HX-1681 transmitter.

And then there's the Tempo, pointed out above.

Etc.

My Messenger II had the original slide switch mike directly wired to the chassis and the accessory plug on the back for the Tone Alert.
It's been many years ago , there was a lumber mill that ran a 27 MHz repeater and used tones for opening the squelch.
I might even have some old reeds around here somewhere for that machine.
They were made by bramco I think and to change tones you had to plug in a different reed just like changing channels by replacing the crystal.

Lots of older tube gear had those such as the Robyn tube radios & the Teaberry Model T radios & many others. Lots of tube type amateur radios as well.
