I bought one. I did the jumper conversion to CB. What's the point of the software if that jumper move is all it takes to make the conversion. I don't want it to do repeaters.
Also, the thing returns to receive after unkeying the mic very slowly... radio seems to work in sloth mode.
Plain english answers, please.
1. Do I need the software to complete the 11m conversion, and
2. Why bother with the software if the answer to #1 is "no".

The conversion is not in software. The CPS, makes it easier to do some of the functions, like memory channels, CTCSS/DCS, offsets and such. Also, easier to set the radio up with the CPS, as opposed to the function menu. All of the fucntions/options are right there, in front of you, without digging through menus. Once the radio is set up to your liking, you can save the setup configuration as a file. Should you ever need to reset the radio, you can restore all of your settings from that saved config file.

I also figured out the delay in receive after unveiling was caused by the SWR function being on. I turned it off and the delay went away. I also turned off the roger beep. I did not hear it (I don't run talkback), but could see the movement of the rf meter.
So far, getting good reports, and making contacts easily. Seems to have great receive.
Mic feels a little lightweight, but works okay. I do like the classic CB look.

If you look at the front of this Galaxy DX88 you'll see the band dial with double band letters in 4 positions. One set of 4 band letters are "high" bands, and the other 4 are "low" band letters. Just above the band selector dial you see a button that reads off & low. When pressed to low, you get access to 4 of the bands on the selector switch, when in the off position, you access the other 4 bands on the selector switch. One set is A-D, the other is E-H.
The band switch on the QT40 is for different bands when switched to H or L using the same band selector knob marked A-F similarly to the Galaxy DX88. You need a channel chart ( road map) to know where you are. Once modified for CB the switch is on L, and the dial is on D for channels 1 (26.965) through 40 (27.405). Of course, selecting WX on the switch accesses the NOAA weather frequencies.

Hi Homer, long time no see! Not sure about the 40, but I have the QT-80 that I won here. I don't use a beep either, but fyi you can't hear the roger beep with the talkback on with the QT-80. You CAN program up to 8 different ones, with up to 14 different tones, along with infinite changes to individual tone length via the CPS. As if the Stryker ones weren't annoying enough.

Another unexpected quirk of this radio is the channel arrangement for channels 23, 24, &25. Unlike import radios who prioritize to the channel numbers and leave the legacy disarrangement of those channels frequencies as 27.255, 27.235, & 27.245, the radio prioritizes to the frequency sequences as do ham radios. To talk to people who are on ch23 on their CB I have to go to ch25, for ch24 I must go to 23, & for ch25 go to 24. I guess I’ll get used to it. If that can be changed with the programming software I may do that, or not…

I just asked google about rearranging the frequencies. Google said, “yes.”
I looked at the software. The bottom line is it isn’t as intuitive as Chirp. I will have to find a YouTube video teaching simple little 1 2 3 steps on doing it. I refuse to get a post high school education to run anything that doesn’t pay me good money. Besides, it gives me frustrations.
