yeticom Optima3

Well, in his defense, a radio guy could have set it up poorly. The stock mic is somewhat muffled at certain audio levels.

To run my ranger sra198, I had to crank the AM mod pot. Running the power high sucks a little modulation but I run a Texas star 500 (or something most I the time) an running a 1-2 watt dead key really makes the audio rock. DONT do that with the stock mic. It'll sound way over-modulated.

That's a pretty small jump, going from 30-35 watts to 100 watts. You probably have a little more room to work with than 100 watts, even on SSB. 150 watts SSB (between the radio and amp if you're sharing the same power source) is probably approaching the hot side of that fuse but should be fine.

Keeping in mind that you're talking about a big truck/mobile/Cb radio freqs mostly, (and I know I'm gonna catch some slack here) but I would consider the Magnum board in the "Palomar FET250HD". It's the same final found in the Magnum 257HP (ERF7530 MOSFET) only there are two of them. The amp is very compact. The optima will drive it very well. You can attenuate your radio or flip the amp on low for around 150 watts). The key up is triggered by rf when you talk and there is an automatic delay (which can actually be adjusted on the inside). No need to change from am to SSB.

I have no doubt you will be happy with the audio results and the feedback you get from radio checks.

Suggestion: place a fan on top of it. It'll make a huge difference when talking at length.

I'm thinking of other amps but they'll all crank out too much power. Anything smaller and the Optima will melt it. Plus, the fet250hd's are like $125.

Id do more watts output if i could get away with it but like i said, im limited to a 20 amp xurcuit. Althought i guess i might be able to tie into a cig light jack for a bit more.

The icom HM-36 hand mic works great with the optima mk3, I would imagine the desk mic would be good as well.
