2 pill amplifiers...

10-4, yea have seen that in the videos, wouldnt think they would cause problems like they have...

Think I'm going to go with someother 2 pill...thanks for the info..

I've been waiting to try and get an answer for sometime now. Prior to these small Amps flooding the market, in the late 60's/early 70's, if you were lucky enough to find an Amp, it was a 110v rather than 12v. You did not start lowering the drive on your radio as they were all in the 4-5 watt range. You hooked up the amp, set it to it's highest possible output without distorsion and went with it. Did the small amps bring on the lowering ded key of your radio ?Just looking for a sensible answer. Towers/Amps were few and far between. Trust me, you don't want to ever get a letter from FCC, in the late 60's, they were located on the 17th floor of the Atlanta Gaslight building. My neighbor was an (Organ player) and she had them send me a letter, wonder why!!!!!!

Most plug in the wall amps back then were tubes right? Even the real Palomar amplifiers from the 80's when they got to a small 2 pill were low drive low dead key input. An example would be a real tx250. Whatever the amp is you have to run it with in it's spec range or you will hurt it. I don't think any of these basic laws of electronics have changed.

Yep my old palomar 225 likes a 1.5-2 watt deal key max and max pep of 12-15 watts. Anything more and it gets hot and sounds bad. They are good amps, just don't like to be over driven.

Started with modding the radios for a low dead key and max swing.

Usually for those who like to watch the watt meter swing and could care less what the audio sounds like.

It is a blue face cobra/palomar amp with two 2879`s , yes?
You should try to achieve approx 25% of the total output of the amp for a dead key for AM operation, remember that AM is a tough mode for amps.
Peak output on AM is controlled by the AMC on AM
Peak output on SSB is controlled by the ALC
I would keep the dead key out of the amp at around 80 watts on high/max.

Put a fan on it regardless.

Ok. Ill get right on it with putting a fan on it. Thanks for all the information. information is always appreciated. Not trying to go max swing. Trying to be clean in and clean out. Not the other way. Was just curious if It was just the dead I had to worry about for setting the radio and not so much worry about the swing.

I personally dont like to drive an amp with another amp. I would go with a high powered radio to "drive" a HD amp. Maybe a 1-pill though.

I HATE high power export radios with a passion. The best place for them is under the wheel of my F150.

I HATE low DK crazy/high peak power radios that drive the snot out of dirty CB amps. That's why you should go with a 100 watt amateur HF radio and a REAL HF amp that is designed for up to 100 watts of drive and still maintain linearity and be clean on the band. :D
