New Uniden 980's on sale

You gonna love this one.......it's a parody of "Turn the gas on Dummy!"

SOO....I get the 11 o'clock curiosity.......

Opened the damned thing up after trying to get the mic to work. Started clicking the switch...twitch, twitch.....then I saw it. Before, I couldn't see the tree because the forest was in the way....but there was some foam padding on backside and on control board. Looking around I found it!
My dumb ass had not installed a 9 volt battery!
Ha! ha! ha! With the exception of only a couple of members on this forum, no one will know about this...….lol...lol...lol.
Many, many years ago the Sears guys delivered a new washing machine to my apartment and I did not want to pay the extra $$$$ for them to set it up for me. I connected the hoses, plugged in the power cord, added the detergent and clothes and hit the start button. Everything was fine until the spin cycle started. Within two minutes, the machine spun away from the wall, the power plug pulled-out from the wall and the drain hose pulled-out of he pipe. Need I say more? What the h*** happened? Answer: I did not remove the rear panel to remove the Styrofoam packing from around the wash drum.

I may sell my "untouched" 980 when my Stryker 94 arrives.

Don't do it if you mounting it for mobile use, and the vehicle has a lot of ignition noise. The noise blanker does not work period. Actually don't know what the noise blanker does, but it sure does not do anything to suppress ignition noise.

I had the 980 too, but I could not see the screen during daylight mobile use, so it got sent back to Amazon. The noise blanker on the 980 works great. I liked the radio, but the screen was a deal killer for me.

I ended up with a President Ronald, and it has a good noise blanker plus a high cut too. Screen is easy to see during daylight mobile use. If I had to do it over again, I would have bought the McKinley with SSB, but did not have the extra cash at the time. Anyway, the Ronald has been an excellent radio for the five weeks that I have owned it.

The Ronald is on sell at Amazon for $109 right now. I paid $129 for mine.

Are you referring to not installing the Stryker 94 in my ruck?
The screen on 980 was difficult to see during daylight at first, but I resolved that issue. I have a 2019 F350 with bucket seats and a center console. I mounted the 980 with Velcro on the top half of the radio case to the lower left side of the console next to my right knee. At first the radio was vertical and I could not see the screen. I rotated / tilted the radio at about a forty-degree angle with the mic jack being higher than the channel selector and it worked-out nice. I agree with you. If it wasn't for tilting the radio, I would have been stuck between a rock and a hard spot.
No you have me concerned about the 94 because it has been converted and it will arrive in a few days. Thanks for the heads-up about the noise blanker.

Are you referring to not installing the Stryker 94 in my truck?

Yes! If the car or truck has ignition noise, the Stryker 94 noise blanker will do diddly-squat to suppress ignition noise. On the other hand, the The Uniden 980 has a top notch noise blanker that does suppress engine noise.

When will this thread end...o_O
When the new wears off on those "980's". Spent good time yesterday shoot'n skip w/ mine and a LD450....just turned on after work and lsb 38 is kick'n, but you can't get word in edge wise. AM is burning too.

Let's awl get on and talk at once. Wish I had my new 2970N2 hooked up, could possibly break through the log jam.

In all, this 980 has good ears, pretty simple to use, clarifier works, I'm impressed with this $100 radio.

I am loving my 980 with the KL203. It is a great combination. The AM power pot on the board is the dead key adjustment. It will swing back up to about 15w from any setting. I keyed up the 203 and started turning it down to 25w output. This ended up with about 1w out of the radio. The peak power is about 150w on my Autek meter. The AM Modulation I set to 100% on my scope while talking into the mic and listening to myself on my 148GTL with headphones and no antenna. This makes it real easy to hear what you are seeing while you make the adjustment. The sideband ALC I set to about 12w on voice peaks out of the radio which is about 150w out of the 203. The D104m6b is set to about 2 on the back and the radio mic level is on 4. I also talk across the front of the mic and not straight into it. It is a fun little rig and it will replace the Stryker 440 in the garage station this spring.

Wish I had the equipment and skills to do my own tune. I'm sure there is room for improvement on this 980. Just out of the box w/ a D104m6b, coupled to ld450

Thanks for the hint on running 2 on mic and 4 mic gain on radio. Noticed less feed back thru ext speaker when not talking into mic but across it.
