Was told at work today that my team needs to find a use for AI with a measurable ROI, or someone higher up would find one for us.
Let them lol. I wouldn't put my team in a position to take the blame for that nonsense. You can automate physical tasks without AI or internet and there is no justification in letting something programmed/prone to so many errors automate the business decisions too. Besides, once it learns something useful from your company, it will use that knowledge to benefit the next paying customer (your competition).

There was a very brief period when chatgpt was kicking out reasonably good answers, but that didn't last long. It took a hard turn towards the meme above and there is no coming back. They demonstrated the awesome capabilities of AI and then aggressively took it away before enough people went to a paid subscription - bad move IMO.

Enshittification will reach the paid users eventually. It always does. That is one thing your company can safely bet on. As long as greedy people run it, AI is about as dependable as a drug addict.

You'll get no argument from me. I've had the "opportunity" to use AI on several projects, and have to constantly watch for hallucinations on even the most simple output.

Can't wait to see what happens when the auditors are told to use some internal AI to get their answers and the AI is having a bad hair day.
 
lol yea. Back when I ser up my server, it was immensely helpful. I went back to have it help me with a webpage for my project and it kept causing issues.

Last week I tried to have it help me with Si5351 code for my ATTiny44A and it kept using the available libraries. I told it countless times that those libraries are too big for the tiny's memory and it would acknowledge and agree with the problem. It would give me some garbage then go right back to existing libraries when I said it was wrong. It can't won't even remember things from the same chat any longer. Glad I switched to the mega...

Whatever black magic it uses, DuckAI seems to sift through unintelligible nonsense and find bias currents for boutique or woefully obsolete amplifiers that have ze-ro service data available :oops:

Ford found out the hard way when they laid off hundreds of their engineers and let AI do their work. After a year or so of issues and numerous recalls they just recently had to rehire 350 of their senior engineers to fix AI's mess. Of course, it's possible that AI never got all the info it needed in the first place. People gotta have job security.

Slightly wrong answers burn more tokens. The longer your chat takes, the more money for them.
 
I hear ya! :). I'm going play the other side of this for a minute. I have found it incredibly useful to a point. I come from an IT background which will help (probably not :)) but for some mundane shit that wastes my time but I want good reliable outcomes its had it uses. Some Radio related examples:

The Good
Recapping:
Wanted the details on recapping some radios (042 Jackson, Adams, Colt 485 DX Black shadow, Colt 320 FM Black Shadow & President 4 button Grant Silver. Now I did reach out to a member here who was helpful (Klondike Mike) but the postage costs were almost as expensive as the cap kits themselves (TO THE UK). So had to bring it all together myself, sorry! actually team effort with Co-pilot (Paid for version).

So I set some criteria, Japan if possible, in stock, size the same or less. I provided links to Farnell/CPC and other suppliers I wanted, I provided specific sites I wanted it to reference like WWDX & Transmission 1. I told it to use but limit it to SAMS, CBTRICKS etc.
Also used to to upload the final order to the supplier.

Also help me create a excel workbook using information from those sources. This was back in Feb or March and I did find some differences when I came to do the actual work but nothing terrible or annoying.

Service Manual/Instruction Manual translation:
Used it for this purpose, especially picture .pdf's (OCR job) comes in handy and does a good job with the correct prompts. Does however struggle with Schematic's sometimes.

The Bad

All of them, Co Pilot, Gemini, Claude are constantly changing what it could do 6 hrs ago will then seem impossible now on some things. Conversions, ability to read uploaded material shit like that, its doing it fine 1 minute and then it cant or wont.
Coding which is not my area of IT, its both good and frustrating. you constantly have to ask it to check its work and act like QC when writing code. Again its all in the prompts and the scene setting. There needs to be some consistency across platforms the features appearing and disappearing are frustrating as FCUK!.

The Ugly

I got so pissed at it one evening I asked it to provide a conclusive way to cancel my subscription without incurring any further charges. It mostly did, then I had the luxury of telling it to FCUK OFF and then when it finished that to find a way to FCUK some more... then closed it before it got a chance to reply. :)

I write this from the local sanatorium... no! seriously though, super helpful but can be super frustrating. IMO I think its still a looooong way to go so look out for free deals on paid for subscription, don't waste a buck/£ on it unless someone else is paying, use the best free one at the current time and use other tools to help form your prompts like this one > Prompt Cowboy can be useful

P.S. The amazing thing is the Caps came from Fargo (ND) by plane to the UK! No shipping fee :-0

We in the CB radio hobby have a very unique ability to see how well AI actually understands what we are asking it and when it just regurgitates what is already available online.

This is because of CB myths!!!
They finally are useful!!!

we are all well aware that as soon as you apply the laws of physics and maxwells equations to the world of CB radio, all the rules go out the window and anecdotal evidence rules the day.

We now have at least 20 years worth of this crap online and as soon as you use the term "CB radio" AI gets very confused because it can't separate the BS from the facts. it can only go off of it's reference material, which is NOT books about electronics.
It's online forum posts and reviews of equipment.

Let's have some fun!

Here are two questions i just asked google AI:

And those of us who have been online in this hobby for a long time can tell that these answers came out of all of the "hi fi" and "schottky diode" discussions that used to be so popular.

That's a great example of AI not perceiving the question correctly and or the question being to ambiguous given the enormity of the subject matter.

I've found being a little more instructive helps. this took less than 5 mins to write out and that was with some changes. It's by no means a perfect prompt and its certainly by no means a perfect AI response BUT in my opinion its getting closer to the useful, maybe even dangerous than complete crap end to end.

As I say I think it has a long way to go, a long way.

The Prompt and the response is way to long to paste here. I put the response in a .doc attachment. The names/ forum handles I chose to reference were ones that came to mind in the 5 mins the credit is to them and why asking or pointing helps with qualification, if I was spending more time in qualification I might ask it to suggest other names from all forums and message boards relevant to the subject matter.
