This week we have been back to short E-skip out here. And I mean really short e-skip! I've had contacts as short as 600 miles and with needle-bending signal strength.......guys in Idaho sound like they are parked a couple blocks down the street. S9+ at times. Lots and lots of AZ, CA, MO, OR...
I've always wondered about those as well! When I had a starduster back in the day I was told that they helped increase the bandwidth of the antenna. The only other things I can think of is that they may help static dissipation or possibly help to make the impedence 50 ohms at the antenna base...
I'm the opposite LOL! Didn't know any of them personally but there was a lot of useful information in the threads on FM Broadcast Engineering & FM Broadcast antenna systems that I referenced fairly often.......it's always a loss when valuable information is no longer available!
That's a shame about The Virtual Engineer shutting down. That was a valuable resource that I used from time to time in relation to my day job. I wonder if it made it onto one of the archive sites before it went away?
Same here. Nothing but static and a few distant voices for the last couple weeks. I've drifted away from the radio and into some of my other hobbies it's been quiet for so long LOL!
Meanwell is a high quality supply and is used in many things, but that doesn't mean it's RF quiet. Megawatt on the other hand is specifically built for the ham and CB market, has extra filtering, and is built to be RF quiet. That is the difference.
Totally agree! It's too bad that there isn't more base station type radios out there. I also like the layout and look of those 2995DX's. If only I could put the guts of an Anytone 5555N2 into the body of a 2995DX LOL! :D We can dream........
And that my friend is just one of several reasons why I will never own another Ranger product. I had both a 2950 and a 2970 back in the 1990's and both had hideous white noise which drove my tinnitus nuts.
Here we are 30 years later, and Ranger radios are still known for all the same problems...
That's too bad about the Sirio, but if your A-99 is only getting across the road something is seriously wrong! I've talked worldwide on A-99's along with lots of other antennas..............
I haven't been on the radio much at all with it being early summer and so many non-radio things to do. But I can report that DX isn't totally dead up here, even though conditions haven't been great.
Daily pattern seems to be.....nothing in the morning, then around noon short skip from CA, OR...
That is the standard Brazilian CB band. They've had 80 channels since the 1980's. Guessing this may have been made for export to the Brazilian market at that time.
You are responding to a, wait for it....... a 22 year old post! Made by a guest no less!
Always a good idea to check the date of the OP before posting.
I think we can say with about 100% certainty that the OP will not see your response.
Sounds like Noise Blanker overload. I get it on my 5555N2 when there are a lot of strong signals across the band............. If I turn on NB the static goes away, but I get a lot of mumbly noise. The passband of the blanker is being overloaded and you can hear the results. Turning down the...
Pretty much a write off for the last five days up here. Endless hours of gentle hiss with just an occasional signal rising out of the weeds. Made contact with Billy Goat down in California this morning, and with 178 DxMan and his friend 120 on Aurora skip a couple nights ago.......they are...
Otherwise known as the "Puerto Rico Superbowl". The story I heard was that when REACT started winding down in the late 90's, Puerto Rican CBers started using 9 as it was a somewhat quieter than any of the other 39 channels....... since then usage has spread to other Latin American countries...
I have so many favorites! But I have a big soft spot for the Icom IC-735.
Built like a tank. Super-reliable. Easy to use, even for a beginner. Easily modified for all-band transmit. Pretty hard to damage with SWR foldback etc. Still pops up on e-bay and other sites from time to time at a...
Had fantastic conditions to Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi & Arkansas yesterday afternoon.
Today it's mostly static (I did hear a little e-skip from California just now) and there is a large CME from yesterday's solar flare heading our way. It is expected to wipe out conditions completely...
