My wife and I use ch. 1 (151.820). We are located in the Austin / San Antonio area and to my amazement hardly hear a thing! I also drove to NE, MO, KY and back to TX earlier this year and heard very little. Didn’t hear much on 146.52 ether.
It's not a fixed lenth, but you can trim a 2 meter antenna to work. You will only be removing an inch or so.
I use a MFJ-1776 ? I can't remember the model number but it's the 2 / 6 meter mag mount. I have had two of them for 10 years now and they work great. I use them on 2 meters AND MURS. On...
I'm a medically retired commercial pilot. I enjoy flying small planes with pilot friends when I can (only a few times a year).
I love machines, I have a 1954 Ford tractor and a 1981 GMC pick-up I enjoy tinkering with.
I also enjoy playing with the Estes rockets with my grandson.
Welcome back! I'm not going to answer your questions because A LOT has changed! If you up-grade your license, read and listen you will pick up on the changes. About the only thing that has not changed in 15 years are antennas.
One of the many changes is there's a new band, 60 meters. It has...
Just put a steady carrier into the mic like, saying the word oonnnee (1) or ffiiivvvveeee (5). Or better yet tuning forks work great. Please don't whistle into the mic. !
I have been a scanner listener for over 30 years. I have the same problem
"Local police, fire, and ems are all on a Motorola APCO 25 Digital system"
Here in central Texas just about everyone's gone to the above and I’m not spending the money to follow them, yet. Most of the fire / EMS still...
I was always told to keep verticals at least a 1/4 wavelength from each other. That's what I've always done and have had no problems. 27 mhz is about 4 1/2 feet (In the 400 mhz UHF band that's about 4 inches!).
A side note here. I did damage the receive board once on a FT-101 that was on 75...
A week before I took a IC-735 to Jarrell, Tx 50 miles to the north on IH-35 for repairs. I can't remember his name but the owner of the shop called me at 2pm. to let me know the radio was ready. It was Thanksgiving Eve 1991, I lived in Austin, Tx. I told him I would be on the way, he said that...
Yes, I use to love CW with a straight key! I'm fist # 9223 cc# 1330. I have not been on CW though for about five years, you know how we go through these "cycles" with our hobbies. I'll listen down there this weekend and see if I hear anything, I'm in central Texas.

What band were you on?
I have learned through out the years that an amp is really not necessary unless you’re on 160 meters or trying to break some world record or something.
