Modern radios such as the Icom 7300 and the Anytones and many others are SDR based radios. They look and function as a radio, but in reality they are a computer and all the parameters are set through software. Those parameters may or may not be adjustable by one or more "hidden" menus. There...
Decent DX day up here today, and it's only half over! I talked to 030 in Limerick Ireland on 26.805FM again; I made contact with him last year as well. West coast of Canada to Ireland on 200 watts into a homemade delta loop. Who says you can't DX in FM mode?!?!
Made several other contacts on...
I heard most of that QSO and tried to call you at the end of it, but couldn't make the trip back to you! I have a pipeline from here to Illinois these days, and talk 164 sometimes in the morning there on 26.805 FM.........
Great conditions here this morning but fizzled a bit in the afternoon...
I hear someone called "Taco Bender" from down that way fairly often, and I've heard him within the last week......... so if there's only one Taco Bender I would say he's alive and well.
Didn't get on the radio until early evening, but when I got on around 5pm we had a serious pipeline to Australia and Hawaii going with big signals both ways!
Talked to several operators in Australia & Hawaii on 36 & 37 all of who sounded like they were parked a mile down the road from...
There's only 1 S unit difference on receive between a 100 watt signal and a 400 watt signal. The reason you couldn't hear one of the stations is more likely due to him having a less efficient antenna system, lower elevation antenna, or a geographical disadvantage (like being in a deep valley)...
LOL! A city I once resided in made a resolution banning the transport of nuclear bombs through it's streets or above it by air! I never did figure out how they planned to stop the Air Force from flying over, or how they knew whether they actually had nukes on board or not!
One word...... Harmonics. Most of that additional power is being radiated on frequencies other than the intended one, hence the very high SWR. It could also be that the amp is self-oscillating. Either way, it's not good.....
Made a couple contacts on 26.805FM this morning but otherwise no radio for me today as it's Canadian thanksgiving and family takes priority over radio......
Two wires passes twice the amperage. Four wires passes four times the amperage. With high powered amps the amperage is even more important than voltage.
I wonder if it was the same people? I've been noticing more and more 11 meter DX activations that are in the same location and at the same time (or right before or after) ham activations from the same place. It seems like hams in other parts of the world other than North America are very often...
Fantastic conditions today out here on the far west coast. Europe and South Africa at good strength this morning up on 555. Lots of action on 26.805FM. Jamaica and Caribbean booming in on 27.515 LSB. And on 36 thru 40......total unmitigated chaos. I've noticed the idiots really ramp up on...
I'll check that out for sure! That's around 1730 PST and we usually still have conditions at that time. Back in the 1980's 32LSB was the main call channel for the Radio Canada club in the Vancouver Island / Gulf Islands area where I live. That was a long time ago now...........
You want as low an angle as possible to the horizon. The lower the angle the further your signal will go before bouncing off the ionosphere and returning to Earth. DX is possible with higher angles of takeoff from the antenna, but you won't reach as far due to the takeoff angle and bounce...
That's too bad. It would have been nice to have a WWDX channel or frequency, but for many of us on here the regular legal 40 is just too crazy and too busy and there simply isn't any viable place where we can all meet and expect to hear one another. A half channel or a freq up above 40 might...
You are talking about the infamous 333. He hasn't been on lately and the story I heard from someone else down there is that he blew up his amp. Hopefully it stays broken and he stays off the air, but I suspect he will be back soon.............
That's because in certain areas those channels are no good! Where I am here on the west coast of Canada, channel 40 is full of AM traffic from Mexico that wipes out both LSB & USB on that channel. And 35 LSB is the primary Australian call channel which is very strong here and it bleeds onto 35...
