Thanks for the tips with using Easypal, Road Squawker. I see it boils down to watching the audio input level and setting the receiver frequency "dead on" with the "Tics". I'm going to give it a try again tomorrow morning... hope conditions co-operate.
You mentioned the need for a good signal...
Road Squawker,
I've tuned in the last couple mornings but propagation has been rather poor lately. On one of the stronger stations heard (Virginia), I can get all the sync lights except the MSC. I haven't seen a pic yet. Running easypal in the "Basic" mode. Is there any setting that I need to...
I'm looking for info on the 40m digi sstv activity on 7173 lsb. Can someone tell me if stations are using the "Hybrid" mode like they are on 14.233 mhz?
Is there much activity... best times to listen?
Using the Easypal software, I copied a station this morn sending sstv but couldn't get a...
Found an article on VLF radio listening in the science news. Article refers to listening to "whistlers" in relation to volcanic activity:

Decision made... I'm taking a new path and going the SDR route.
I'm going to purchase the Elad receive only version of their FDM-DOU SDR transceiver, rather than purchase the S2 (PC only) SDR.
This way I can operate the DOUr model (with a tuning knob and in standalone mode) without a pc if I...
I hear ya. I paid $1200 (in 1990's dollars) for my first PC. It wasn't even a 286. It had an 8088 processor if memory serves me right, and it was a real piece of garbage. Soon after I bought it, the prices on the 286-386 machines came down to under a $1000 to make way for the early Pentiums...
m42duster,
Yes, the CR1-a certainly is an alternative to the PC only SDR "box".
Here's another alternative from Elad that has my eye also:
FDM-DUO
Shown is a transciever, but apparently there is a receive only model called the FDM-DUOr. I'd be very tempted to purchase this when available...
I guess you pretty much summed it all up. Yes... at what point do I "dive in", and I am the only one that can answer the question for myself.
The R75 is the "safe bet" financially speaking, but the temptation of the "new toy" has a mysterious allure. ;-)
m42duster,
Your right, for the "short term"... deciding if it was what I wanted and then selling it if it wasn't right for me.
I think if I kept it too long though, it might be like trying to sell an old desktop PC when the state of hardware has long moved passed them.
I believe that...
I've been in the radio hobby since the '60's. I'm used to 'twiddling knobs" on my radios, tuners, and pre-amps. I'm presently using a Yaesu FRG-100 and am looking to upgrade to an Icom-R75...
but...
I'm real curious about the SDR "revolution" going on. My main interest is DC to 30Mhz, but...
Digipan is the easiest for beginners. Fldigi is the way to go when you've mastered Digipan.
Make sure audio is adjusted so that the "T/R" power (not sending characters) on a wattmeter is one half the "Tune" power, and you will be sending clean psk.
If your radio is 100w pep, make sure the...
I hear ya. I was interested in copying the digi sstv on .233 until I found out you had to be connected to the internet to receive the pic. I was wondering why I couldn't get Easypal to actually receive a picture even when the sigs were good.
What's the point of using any RF at all?
I...
I've noticed the "dead zone" also, but here at my location it's only been since about the past week. Strange thing is, I can copy EU digi on 28.120mhz nearly all day long but it's been dead on 11m. I think it's more lack of activity than just no propagation. Usually, I don't copy any SSTV on...
I've been copying 27700khz SSTV using my Yaesu FRG-100 rcvr for nearly a year now. It's surprising how often 11m is open to Europe in the mornings. I'm not saying you'll see SSTV every day, but I've received lots of pics from all over Europe and also south of the US border.
These days you can look on ebay and buy a LCR tester without an enclosure pretty inexpensively. Then you can wind a few turns around the toroid and can use the tester to see exactly what range the toroid is good for.
Yea, lucky me to get a not-so-great radio/mic. Having nothing to compare it to, nor any idea that things weren't right, I just made it work "my way".
And you're right... that cord is sure stiff. Good thing I don't use it in a cold car!
I was lucky to have bought a couple DIP version 2166's back when. At least you can get the adapter to make things easier for you. Building it in a nice enclosure will also make things much easier.
Since I needed minaturization to fit the circuit in the mic, I used the "dead bug" method rather...
11 meters open into Europe again today 02-08-2014. I like to listen for the digital activity around 27.500 khz.
Psk31, possibly Olivia 8/250(?), and some weak cw. I copied the call 14V825 (France) calling CQ on cw at 27.50153 1805UTC. Signal was very weak, and I didn't hear him make contact...
