With the kind of wattage he was running, 40+ miles shouldn't be an issue with a ton of antennas. I've done 25+ miles on an A99 and a bone stock ratshack TRC-465 on SSB and the A99 was only 15ft (to the base) off the ground. 400w deadkey swinging up to 1200w on a (hopefully better) antenna 30+...
Interesting project.... I suppose you could use something like Ventrilo for that purpose as you can set it to vox. Setting up a vent server is really easy.
The PLL has to be replaced in order to get extra channels. IIRC this radio is very similar to the uniden pc122. I used to have one and it was actually pretty good on SSB, and decent audio on AM. Crank up the rf power pot, through a decent mike on it (you'll have adapt it to the stupid 5 pin DIN)...
Just from looking at the map it looks like this: Station info for GB7JF-B - Google Maps APRS is the closest to the center of town. Anyone have a legend to all the symbols on there?
Apparently a group in Europe called Telecomix is trying to keep in contact with Egypt on 40m... I tried a few websdr stations and didn't hear anything, but there aren't many operators in Egypt. Most of the ops in Egypt were trained in the military so that might not help.
The IRC channel they...
The zinc will corrode into a white powder over time. It will protect the steel as it does this but you really should isolate the aluminum and steel with some sort of insulator.

I'd hate to butt in to a conversation, but, if you are going to try to do an exhaustive comparison of antennas, why not test both heights to see if it is design or height providing the advantage? Test a 12 footer and 30 footer at the same mounting point, then add 18ft of mast to the 12ft antenna....
I picked up a Midland 1001z on Amazon for $21, decent little radio, but thanks to its plastic casing and light shielding it picks up powerline noise badly. Good thing it has an rf-gain knob. There is a schematic floating around for it, but I'm not sure how accurate it is since adjusting the mod...
fldigi is available for Mac if that helps. I haven't seen any actual control software for the jupiter on Mac, but maybe you could get something running parallels?
I've been thinking of picking one of those up, but I'm a little wary of the fact so many refurbished units are out there. Do they fail often for some reason? How do they compare to other brands in reliability?
I'm betting fixed just means stationary transmitters. It doesn't seem to designate exactly who uses what frequency except for government ones (different colors)...
