The pizza pan trick didn't work for me, so I moved my stuff into the living room. I'm getting much better reception in here and it's even better when I put my antenna out on the balcony. I live close to I-35 in Austin and traffic here is terrible, so I get plenty of talk from the frustrated...

Forgive me for being ignorant. Why do I need a cookie sheet or refrigerator for better reception? And why should I not transmit when the antenna is attached to them? And why should I not transmit if I use a wire out the window?

I have recently developed an interest in Amateur Radio. It was recommended to me to get a scanner so I could listen in on Ham frequencies until I could learn more and get my license and some good equipment. What kind of scanner would I need to listen to ham frequencies? Is it rude to listen...

Funny, I saw an SWR meter at Fry's today that I had never noticed. Is amplification legal or is this a violation of FCC rules? I'm not sure if I completely understand that part. If I don't plan to amplify my radio, I shouldn't have to worry about it blowing up, correct?

What about the "tune SWR" part. That's the part I didn't get.

What about the Uniden 68 LTW? It has weather channels which would be nice. Also, does the radio need to be tuned up? I see that several people have mentioned that in other threads and I noticed it's offered as a service at most online shops.
