CAN ONE DEFINE A GOOD RADIO "TECH" FROM A "HA

I tend to agree with you on that one Ped ......so I guess the bottom line here is this ,if one is happy with the work that a so called "tech" does for them ,that's all that really matters ,is what IM gathering here ? IM sure even folks that have done business with the folks on the "bad list" were even happy campers even if the work wasn't done as good as it could have been done by somebody else according to "whom" Hmmm ? Electrical tape or heat shrink ? I suppose both work but which one looks more prettier ? even seen some sloppy soldering in my time ,but it worked all the same. So as far as this business goes and what "others " do to our radios and without really having the knowledge of what is good or bad ? as long as it works and works good enough for the operator ,that's all that really seems to matter in the end. So just maybe ,in many cases ,there really isn't much differance between a "Hack" and a "Tech" ? I would think most would fly there certificates and diplomas proudly ,but like I said ,over the years I think I saw one on the wall of one shop and it said something about being a graduate of Devry ....I suppose that beats a sharp stick in the eye ?. I've seen that list many times before NS )-: ......the way I look at that is this .....if one likes to point the finger at somebody else ? little do they know that they have 3 more pointing right back at themselves. Most what is done to these radios is an illegal act ....so I guess one can be better then the other at breaking the law ? ...back to my question ...what then is the differance between a "tech" and a "Hack" ? maybe it's just that one understands what's really going on more so then the other ? or maybe there two of the same to a degree ? ......one things for sure ,IM not one to have a full understanding of all of this (I know only a little, because there's just to much to know in the first place) but I can truly appreciate a good talking and receiving radio all the same no matter who did the work. (-: .......and thanks to the Internet and Forums alike ,even the quacks of the world can be praised......I guess it just needs to be a Hands on type situation and what one has experianced with his or her radio person ?(Notice I said "Radio Person") Auh yes !! You can please some of the people some of the time but you can not please all the people all the time. Different strokes for different folks ........Can't we all just get along ? (-: Damn it !! if he didn't cut that diode all over again. .......OH YEAH !!! Has anyone ever known a woman to do this kind of work ? Just was curious. SK OUT !!

There's definately alot of difference between a Hack and a Tech...

When something happens to these 2... I hope there is someone to fill their shoes... These are examples of "True Tech's" and great people to work with all the way around.

The list just gives you a idea. Some may not agree with all of the entries on their. Their is a difference between a hack and a tech. That is correct. I seen the difference in many radios. I seen the work of a tech that hangs out on another forum they praise him highly but he is perfect example of a hack. The radio was completely screwed up after it came back from him off frequency was one of the issues too.

Look no further

Justin at FGBest Comminunications. No hype here. Just rock solid work and the test equipment to prove it.

Sue for Slander in this business ? Now I'd like to see that !!
Hacker - (noun) 1 : one that hacks; 2 : a person who is inexperienced or unskilled at a particular activity <a tennis hacker>; 3 : an expert at programming and solving problems with a computer; 4 : a person who illegally gains access to and sometimes tampers with information in a computer system or radio equipment if you will.
technician
(noun) 1 : a specialist in the technical details of a subject or occupation <a computer technician>; 2 : one who has acquired the technique of an art or other area of specialization
So basically "I" can look at those two def's at being very closely related in this business. Even though pride and a good track record can go a long ways . Alcoholism is a disease of mind , body and soul ......most that practice there diseases on a daily bases will not admit they have a problem (and for all they care ? they don't !) .....it is truly a disease of denile. Some are simply sicker then others. When I first asked my question on what the differance was between the two (hack&tech) I was only looking for a truthful answer.(and I know by reading the posts there after that they were very fair answers to my question) No offence meant. .......one things for sure ......if IM going to have it done the wrong way according to whom ever ? I just hope that I get it done the right way in a wrong kind of a way by someone that takes pride in what they do ,weather or not they feel the need to admit what they are or what there not . Is this Slander on Switch Kits part ? .....I honestly think not. But I learned a long time ago that the truth doesn't always feel very good nor is it always accepted with open arms either......very simlar to the alcoholics "denile" ......but yet the finger pointing continues to go on year in and year out .....in this business ...you point the finger and you tend to have 3 more pointing right back at yourself (anyway I look at it ) Switch Kit

Well has anyone ever talked to a radio tech or Auto Mechanic that didnt bad mouth or laugh at or even roll his eyes at the sound or conversation of another shop or work??? That can all only be expected. It happens and applys to alot of other things as well. Well we know where the good guys are at anyways. pssssssssssssst (Comunications Experts) But make sure you tell everyone ;)

There are a lot of "techs" out there that charge for a "tune-up" that just clip the limiter, or do a bad swing mod (same as clipping the limiter at the end of the day), but they don't do anything to the Receiver side of things. That is where the test equipment and knowledge to use it is absolutely essential. And it is the most important part of the equation. Export radios are notorious for being nowhere near aligned right once converted to 11 meters. I don't care how loud, or how much swing, if I can't hear all that is there to hear, what good does swing do me?!

There are only a small handful of techs that I would entrust my radios to.

Watch out for the flavor of the week, remember when old#7 was the shizzle.
Been on these boards along time, seen alot of hacks come and go.

Is this an example of both ? which one is the hack ?

chuckles

every board I've been on has their idols

im with bob on this one

Now where the heck is the title to this topic :?:

can you tell a good tech with just a huh?

I can tell you it's not the certs on the wall or the equipment lineup, sometimes it's not even the knowledge they have. Maybe you take a little of each, add some attitude, and get something worth talking about. That is, a good attitude, a good assortment of equipment, enough knowledge to know what their doing, and throw in a following, and there you go. pretty much describes most of the idols on every board.

Now, the ones that design the radios, them thar are known as ENGINEERS. You catch an engineer working on peoples rigs out the back of his van, run for the hills because something has gone awry.

What would a good tech do for someone that wanted their radio hacked up? send them down the road?

The black list? I suppose every good tech out there started out that way, good? Yea, Mr. Bojangles.

Who cares, I guess a good tech is one that makes you feel good? You feel good when you get what you want. That is the numbers on your mud-O-duck meter and flowers on the air, and a radio that feels good to touch because your all warm and fuzzy after getting stroked? Yea baby!

What kind of philosophical question is this? What kind of answer makes you feel good?

Do you feel good?

How about a purist tech that tunes it all to specification, gets you all centered up, optimizes all the filters and peaks it just to saturation? A classic text book tune?

Now do you feel good? Or are you going to cry when a mud duck trailer trucker tells you your audio is a little flat or says your off frequency because his Galaxy meter says so?

What are the standards of credibility? Most of the CB community is sure not happy with that purist mentality, so you kind of have to give them a "garbage" tune so they sound "loud" and "proud" and can swing from a 1W carrier to 50W. Now your a good tech cuz you put that swing on.

How about the potential of your hardware? It's the same thing. what makes a good radio is the same thing that makes a good tech. Its all in what it can do for you, and all you want is to feel good, right? It don't matter if its right, wrong, better or worse. So you dump on a Galaxy because it aint as good as a Ranger that covers 24 to 32. See, that Galaxy dint make you feel all warm and fuzzy, you couldn't go to the lower side of 28 and PO some geeky ham. Same deal with the tech, they didn't give you 49 watts of swing, so you dont feel all warm and fuzzy, or maybe they just din't stroke you right?

Boy I'm good at rambling on and on about a bunch of useless nothing, huh?

What makes a good tech? One that makes you feel good. Thats the game of life. Just close your eyes and feel good about it.

Very well put there C2 great post !! ....that was "Hack" but I think you knew that already. No hero's or idols for me on these boards from those that conceder themselves tech's or otherwise. There are those that do go out of there way to answer questions and be very helpful unlike those that will gladly take your money rather then to post what one might be able to do to solve certain problems. On one side of the coin ,that is business and I can understand that , on the other side is those that do know there trades and will take the time to be helpful towards others on these Forums and they know who they are.(they are the true heros and they seem to be very humble about it) Thank you. When the ad campains get thick , and posts over flow with prop's , for some reason or other ? it never really sits very well with me but there's still nothing wrong with a pat on the back from time to time .....this guy does this and that guy does that ect.ect. but yet I can also understand that some folks need somewhere to go to have work done. I like the fact that this Forum isn't a CB/Radio shop owned site where in many cases it's there way or the highway(even though it does tend to lean more in one direction) .....(and I've seen that happen before) ....I've gotten more then my share of help here as well as else where ,weather they were certified tech's or hacks or just operators enjoying there hobbies .....I often wonder if the H word is taken the wrong way ? just a label I suppose, but somebody had to start somewhere. Reminds me of a time about a year ago or so ,one of the Internet Forum bad boys had given me some sound advise on a radio tune up .it worked and it worked well !! Just somebody else helping somebody else . It truly felt good after all was said and done weather it was right or wrong according to whom ? What did you call it ? Warm and fuzzy (-: and to Justin .....I've known many a cb radio operators over the years ....they could care less about what makes the radios work, they make there own rules and really don't care what you or I think weather it's for the best or not .....where is it written that they need to know what a mixer is or how a receiver operates ? ...Thats your job Justin ....that's why you get paid for what you do. I'd guess to say 9 out 10 operators have radios so they can talk to others they really could care less about the theroy of relativity here....and that's no offence to you.....most of them will gladly give you chunks of there paycheck for you to make them Bob bitch'ins on there radios. Please correct me if IM wrong.
