Amp reduces gain when going from standby to operate

New amp, ameritron AL-80B. When switching from STBY (standby) to XMT (operate) the amp has the effect of reducing the receive gain. Does not happen when the amp is off - only when energized. Is this normal? (AMp has the grid current protection and QSK board in it)

    First HF Rig - recommendations?

I am looking to purchase my first HF rig. Options I am kicking around: 1. Buy a used radio like a Kenwood TS440 - looks like for between $400 and $700 I can get a working specimen of decent condition. 2. Buy a new moderately priced rig like: - Kenwood TS 2000 ($1500) - Yaesu FTDX3000...

2995DX - Frequency Counter Port = RF Sample Port

The Ranger 2995dx has a port for a frequency counter. Does anyone have the radio and knows how this works? Is this a full RF Sample port (RX and TX) that a scope can be connected to? Or is it TX only? Hard to tell from manual.

Neighbor complaining about noise in his surround sound system . . .

Added an inexpensive low pass filter I had laying around, marginal impact to SWR. Not sure it helped. Also ordered one that was highly recommended on hamnet - bencher ya-1 which I will swap in when it arrives. Other than that anything else I can do on my end? Antenna make a difference...

    IMAX 2000 vs Attic Dipole

Did some quasi scientific testing . . . . Tip top of IMAX level with plane of dipole hung in attic. Locals hitting me at 9 using the IMAX, barely moving needle on dipole. IMAX outside, about 75 feet from house. Dipole located in attic. Other than feedline and antenna, all else...

    So I have a 2995DX on the way . . . . which amp?

Dead key I believe 5-50 watts. Consensus of the locals is that a tube amp tolerates more and gives a cleaner signal in terms of bleed over and interference problems - suggestions for a tube amp for the RCI 2995DX? From what I read so far, it should not be a "sweep tube" type - so no RM...

    Antenna Hardware . . . .

The IMAX is sitting on top of a 15 foot pole bolted to the shed and I think I want to go up to 30 feet with it. Even though the Radio shack poles are pretty heavy duty, I'm thinking 15+ feet of unsupported pole is going to whip around too much and I need to tie it down. Need hardware to...

Just dusted off a Uniden Bearcat BC890XLT

Wanted to use it for CB but it looks like it doesn't go lower than 29 Mhz. Any way to mod? Or am I just using it wrong?

What do you guys think of RM?

Seem pretty cost effective for the watt . . . . looks like they use tubes: http://www.rmitaly.com/showProducts.asp?idgr=1&cat=7&NumPagRec=1 This guy has them pretty cheap when compared to X-force base amps and some others: http://www.dandjradiowaves.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=27_55...

Is Channel 9 still the emergency channel?

Bunch of guys speaking spanish using it up here in the Northeast . . . . . apparently not emergencies. Is it still supposed to be for emergencies?

    RANGE: SSB vs AM

Two questions: AM uses carrier SSB pumps all the wattage into modulation COnsidering the legal 4 watts Vs 12, which gets out further? Also, if using a little amplification, are there any rules of thumb that hold true - like SSB goes 4 times further than AM amd 100 watts of amp on...

    How far from power lines?

I have an IMAX 2000 on the way. Can't go on roof, was thinking about a yard mount. How far from power lines (not high voltage, regular stepped down residential lines) do I need to be to minimize interference? When I drive under the lines to get out of the driveway with the mobile, I...

    Which Base?

CB w/ SSB. Unless there is a compelling reason, haven't looked at the 10m bases - let me know if I should. Looking at the Galaxy 2547 and the Ranger TR-696F SSB. Looks like the Galaxy does 12v which is neat if I want to pack it up, but the truck has a big inverter anyway so no biggie...

    Disappointed - Astatic D104M6B - Recommendations?

Received a new one from Walcott today. Underwhelmed with the build quality - think felt cheap. Not the D104's I remember of old. They even have you plugging the battery right into the circuit board - seems like a bad design for the sake of saving a 10 cent connector. To boot, the thing...

    SWR and Power?

As some know from another thread, I just put a new Galaxy 959 in the truck. Was DKing 6w with a Firestik cellular look alike mag mount With a little wil, same spot on the roof, much lower SWR's (like from 2.2 down to 1.2) and it is now DKing higher at 10 watts. Does that sound right...

    Dropped my radio!

ANd of course it landed on the circuit board and cracked it. (Was re-installing in the car and not paying attention. It was a Midland 79-290 . . . liked it but the detachable faceplate broke pretty quickly so I don't think I want to get another. So what should I get - needs to be front...

    Who to buy from online?

I am in the process of selecting a SSB base station. So far I like the Ranger TR696F. Any recommendations on who to buy it from online? I've looked at Copper, GIJoe, Durham, and Clay's radio shop. Price is out of whack on some and not all offer peak and tune services etc. Any other...

    Stealth base antenna

I am looking to buy a base station for the house (CB with SSB). Need to figure out what to do for an antenna. I can't hang a 30 foot antenna on the roof. I could mount something to a fence behind some trees. It would have to be lower than 30' to remain inconspicuous I could mount...

    Best Band for Mobile Communications?

I am looking to set up a means of communication with a 50 mile range that would not rely on repeaters or anything else but two radios and power to work. I currently have CB's with SSB in both vehicles, but the range is limited. I'd like to replace those and get a base unit for the home. So...
