I would point out that, at least recently, the FCC seems to only care once you have stepped over the 28MHz line into 10 meter territory. I am not sure if this is because the HAMs reported it and did the investigative work for the FCC, or if the FCC has just given up on the 27.405 to 28.000 free...

Well if you really want to roll your own, you might try the SSM2166 which contains all of the goodies you would want (and some you don't want, noise gates NEVER sound good) in one package. Here is a link to the data sheet, complete with artwork to for the evaluation board...

Receive Tone Modification: Placing a 0.0047uF cap from R133 (the side opposite C26) to ground cleans up a lot of the white noise. I ran mine to the "non functional after modification +10kHz" switch so I could switch it in and out. 73 riq165
