You didn't give anyone nearly enough information to tell if the person giving you the bad signal report is correct.
Are you watching your output on a watt meter?
What kind of dead key / PEP output are you seeing out of the amplifier?
What is the dead key and PEP output of the radio...
I've also had my eye on the ftdx1200 and was curious of the same.
My only other experience with an HF transceiver on AM was an Icom IC-735 and if you gamed the ALC via the ALC port on the back with a 9 volt battery and a potentiometer you could get it to swing forward on an AVG watt meter and...
Picked up this mystery 8 pill today for next to nothing
Going to power it up when I get home, don't have a driver for it yet but just going to see if it does what it should with just a stout radio driving it. The wire spaggetti around the power supply looks worse than it is, builder could...
I'm all for your cause but you are assuming the PLL chip was even wired in a way that would let a software hack rx/tx out of band. I Know some guys that develop and design embedded solutions like the front-end to a modern uniden radio and these kinds of considerations go into the original...
I was really surprised the level/quality of modulation the 505xl had out of the box.
I found the stock mic to have a very nice tone to it as well. Don't get rid of that stock mic, put it on a different radio (Cobra 29's love 'em). It's a really good stock mic and makes some radios scream.
Is the radio shack SWR meter set to PEP OR AVG?
6 watts AVG could be right for an out of the box single final radio that's detuned from the factory.
If you've been reading in AVG flip it to PEP, maybe it will make you feel a little better.
Either way, turn up the AMC pot all the way (yes...
I have a TRC-457. I'm interested in the two mods above to the diode pair/clipper that comes stock. What net effect would adding a diode or two in series with d21 (positive side on my radio) or replacing the stock diode @ d22 (negative side) with a schottky have? I assume you'd create favorable...
Well, before doing much troubleshooting I swapped the 1969 final with a known good one. Same thing, no visible RF output on a watt meter @ 20 watt scale in AM or SSB.
I plugged a radio in right next to it and I can hear the TX audio on AM when the monitor radio is on the same channel.
Went...
Uniden Washington, no tx power. Looking at it for a friend. This thing is really nice inside and out except for the stupid channel mod/unlocked clarifier crap.
Excellent RX, but no rf output.
- mic changes transmit indicator to red, receive drops out like it should (mic is wired correctly)...
I had always avoided the new front mic style 148's due to the bad reviews and trash talking but I recently picked one up to do hifi direct injected audio with and honestly out of the box it was as good if not better than any 30+ year old side mic 148 I've ever had my hands on at least on RX and...

tr41/tr42 (the darlington pair) modulates the driver/final.
Kind of weird that on the new style 148 GTL's tr41 is mounted on the back chassis wall w/ the so239 instead of to the side of the transformer like in all previous 148 revisions.
If you only swapped/removed a few caps those...
I noticed that c182 doesn't exist in the newer 148's which I also have. What was different about c183? I changed c183 in my new 148 to a 2.2uf cap for more low end.
I actually did all of this (except for removing c182) as per Joe Dirt's recommend 148 hifi mod...
Anyone know why someone would connect a diode between the two bias VRs in a Cobra 148? I have what looked to be a stock Taiwan Cobra 148 but I noticed a diode soldered across the final and driver bias adjustments (vr8 & vr9).
I'm going to upload a picture to show this. I plan to remove it...
Well, fired the radio up last night with all known good tubes.
Hum persists. :confused1::mad::blush::blink::bored::ohmy:
Maybe I have some bad resisters.
I'm hesitant to think it's a wire dress issue (had to move two + leads to mount my replacement caps under the big power supply...
Of the 18 or so tubes I had for this radio, I had them all tested.
The ones I got back as bad (he said leaking, shorted or one was so weak it was barely working)
2x6au6
2x6ea8
1x6bq5
I have enough "good tubes" to stock the radio back up, except I need to order 1x6ea8.
The two...
