That distinction belongs to Mount Chimaborazo in the Andes Mountains in Ecuador. Although Chimaborazo is about 10,000 feet shorter (relative to sea level) than Everest, this mountain is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) farther into space because of the equatorial bulge.

Speaking of equatorial bulges, I have a bulge aroind my equator too but I am working to reduce it.

The station was maintained at an orbit between 296 km (184 mi) and 421 km (262 mi) altitude and traveled at an average speed of 27,700 km/h (17,200 mph), completing 15.7 orbits per day.[6][7][8]
Not that far but it was still COOL via 2 meter Simplex...(same antenna set-up as below) but not rolled up...
I worked Shannon Lucid while she was on-board.
The orbit where the station was passing NE from Nebraska (where she answered my call) and worked her till she was over Chicago.
Also worked W5LFL Dr.Owen Garrett on the Space Shuttle Columbia on his First Flight(first flight of Amateur Radio aboard the Shuttle)
Dr. Garrett had just finished working W5RRR (Houston Space Center ARS) When he signed with them I called. (about 150 watts)
I about passed out when he acknowledged my call.
I had a pair of Stacked 15 element beams at 60 ft. on the second highest location in the county 1085 ft ASL...
Knowing this event was coming and wanted to try and hear his signal, I climbed the tower a couple days before and rolled the beams about 15 degrees above the horizon.

The Shuttle was on a path heading directly over Houston and they came right at me....

Gary, I worked Yuri, U4MIR aboard MIR also many years ago. The Russians used a frequency for their routine comms that was in the 149 mhz range. It just happened to be tbe same freq as one of our provincial radio grid repeaters. If I turned the CTCSS off in my radio I could tell when MIR was in range by listening to the provincial grid radio frequency They were always yakking on there in Russian..

Downtown London England in 1969.A friend of mine Mr.Skip in Baxter GA, was talking to the Watchmaker on a Moonraker and I was just listening. I broke and told him wish I could talk like that, then Watchmaker told me to go ahead, I like to fell out, I looked and my antenna switch and it was on the Big Stick rather than the HyGain 3 element, I didn't change a thing. What a thrill , don't know how far it is, just a long ways.
